Meet the new CAF President Ahmad

Photo of the new CAF President

On Thursday the leader of Madagascar's FA, Ahmad Ahmad was elected the new Caf president, beating Issa Hayatou by 14 votes
Four years ago Hayatou was re-elected unopposed, but this time Ahmad made history in the Caf election held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 60th anniversary of the federation.
Ahmad beat the Cameroonian with 34 votes to 20. Then the man who ruled African football for nearly 30 years, Hayatou, had to be dragged out of the Nelson Mandela Hall, ignoring journalists requests for comment.
Just yesterday Ahmad was still relatively unknown, even in Southern Africa but all that will surely change as the hours pass by. In the months and years to come, he will reshape African football.

Meeting Charles Manson in prison made 'the hair on the back of my neck' stand up, says former ABC News sound man

Kenny Kosar will never forget the moment he came face-to-face with notorious murderer Charles Manson.

It was December 1993. At the time, Kosar was working as a sound recordist for a Diane Sawyer interview that was being taped for ABC News at the Corcoran State Prison in California.

“I was working production for ABC News and we were heading off for Corcoran Prison to interview this man,” Kosar told ABC News “20/20.” “The plan was, we would set up the room… and the very last thing to do would be to send me out into the hallway to put a microphone on Charles Manson.”

The infamous jailhouse interview with Manson aired on ABC News a few months later in March 1994.

Liverpool set to complete the signing of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner's

Timo Werner's agent has confirmed there is interest in the RB Leipzig attacker from Premier League clubs amid speculation linking him with Liverpool.

Werner, 21, has enjoyed an outstanding season with Leipzig, scoring 14 goals in the Bundesliga -- more than any other German player -- and impressing with his pace, ability to finish counter-attacks and contribution to the club's pressing tactics.

The Daily Mail reported this week that Liverpool are keen on the former Stuttgart forward, and agent Karlheinz Forster told Bild that the Germany under-21 international is attracting interest from England.

I would never sell Angel Dimaria, Chicaritho, Danny Welbeck-Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says he "would never have sold" Angel Di Maria, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez or Danny Welbeck, nor would the manager have given the go-ahead to some of Manchester United's signings.

"Manchester United sold players that I would never sell and bought players that I would never buy," Mourinho told the BBC in a preview of an interview to be aired on Thursday night.

United have lost their place as the dominant force in English football since Sir Alex Ferguson called time on his glory-laden reign in 2013.

The Old Trafford giants turned to Mourinho after frustrating spells under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal -- a period when United flashed the cash without much success.

'Get Out' star on not being 'black enough'

Despite being a dark-skinned black man, actor Daniel Kaluuya still has to prove his race.
That's what the "Get Out" star said in an recent interview with GQ magazine.
He spoke out after Samuel Jackson criticized the casting of Kaluuya, who is British, in the horror film.
"Get Out," which was written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele, has been celebrated for taking on racism in a plot centered on a black man visiting his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend.
In an interview with New York radio station Hot 97.1 last week, Jackson wondered "what that movie would have been with an American brother who really feels that."
"Daniel grew up in a country where they've been interracial dating for 100 years," he said. "What would a brother from America have made of that role?"

Updates on Dutch Elections and the Future of European Union

By EIMC

(CNN)Voters in the Netherlands head to the polls Wednesday in an election widely seen as an indicator of populist sentiment across Europe.
With the first round of the French presidential election just over a month away and Germany headed to the ballot box later this year, the Dutch battle is being closely watched for clues to wider political trends.
Conservative Prime Minister Mark Rutte is facing a tight battle with far-right rival Geert Wilders, whose anti-immigrant, anti-Islam tirades have landed him in court -- but also won him widespread support in a country that is increasingly polarized by austerity and immigration issues.
Rutte's Party for Freedom and Democracy, the VVD, leads the latest Peilingwijzer poll of polls by Leiden University, but Wilders' Freedom Party, the PVV, is hot on its heels.

The Dutch political landscape is splintered, with 28 parties on the ballot, and the country's system of proportional representation means some form of coalition government is almost guaranteed.

Rise of Populism

The Netherlands vote will be studied for insight into a wider populist trend in Europe and elsewhere.
Close to a dozen European Union countries will hold elections this year with populist-nationalists, many buoyed by US President Donald Trump's victory, riding high in the polls. A strong showing for them could put the European Union, already rocked by Britain's impending exit, under greater strain.
In France, Marine Le Pen -- who wants France to drop the euro and has threatened, like Wilders, to hold a Brexit-style referendum on quitting the European Union -- has made her right-wing National Front party a leading contender in April's presidential ballot.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who's due to meet with Trump this week, faces attacks from the right over her handling of Europe's refugee crisis.
But Wilders' popularity has slipped in recent weeks, said Quentin Peel, associate fellow at London-based think tank Chatham House -- and he believes that could be down in part to Trump's arrival in power.
"I think that very well-grounded middle-of-the-road solid Dutch citizens have been a bit concerned about what has been happening in Washington," Peel said.
"The trouble is [the results] are very difficult to predict. You've got no less than 28 parties running in this campaign, and you're probably going to ... end up with a very complicated coalition and Mr. Wilders is not going to be part of it."
Geert Wilders: Why voters are flocking to Dutch Trump

Poll position but no gold

Should Rutte's lawmakers form the largest group in the 150-seat House of Representatives, he is expected to form a new coalition government with at least three other parties, giving him a third term in office.
But maintaining the status quo is exactly what many Dutch voters have tired of, and Wilders rated strongly in pre-election polls thanks to his no-nonsense rhetoric and often controversial views. Other parties -- including Rutte's VVD -- have lurched to the right in response.
Musician and actor Ron Mesland, from Amsterdam, said he was concerned about the wider impact of Wilders' popularity. "Most other parties seem to adopt his speech and his ideas, and that really worries me," he said.
Ruud Koole, politics professor at the University of Leiden, said that in the event Wilders secures the most seats in the House of Representatives, the country's political system would likely make it extremely difficult for him to govern.
"If Wilders' party were to become the biggest ... he'll have to make a coalition with other parties. The problem for Wilders is that other parties do not want to enter a coalition with the PVV."
Koole said Wilders is popular because he speaks to the specific concerns of some voters, "about unemployment, about health care, but especially about the Dutch national identity, which lead to foreigners, immigrants, asylum seekers, also refugees.
"Voters for Wilders don't really believe that he has the solutions to solve these problems, but at least he expresses their concerns and that is why he polls rather high in this campaign."

Tensions with Turkey

Meanwhile, tensions between the Netherlands and Turkey have escalated since the Dutch government refused to allow Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to visit the Dutch city of Rotterdam for a political rally at the weekend.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded by accusing the Dutch of being responsible for the massacre of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995, when Dutch UN peacekeepers failed to protect them from Bosnian Serb forces who overran the town.
Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, waded into the diplomatic row Wednesday, tweeting that Rotterdam was "destroyed by Nazis" but now has a Moroccan-born mayor. "Anyone seeing fascism there is detached from reality. We are Europeans & proud," he said.
Worse than Wilders? Why refugees fear status quo

Key issues for voters

According to preliminary Eurostat data, the Netherland's economy grew by 2.1% last year, and investors have remained reasonably calm throughout the campaign.
But Rutte's tough austerity measures aimed at combating the 2011-2012 recession have hit the country's poorest the hardest and that has weighed on their minds as they prepare to visit the ballot box.
"My biggest concern is that the working class is being put down," said delivery driver Tony Regnerus. "The immigrants are all coming in, and they get a better life than the working man. They're not pushed to do anything with their life, they're not pushed to get a job.
"Every day, I go to big cities like Rotterdam and Gouda and Delft, they're all wearing Canada Goose jackets -- €600, and I can't pay it -- [but] I'm a working man. It's gotta be the other way around."
The Netherlands' relationship with the European Union has been another hot topic on the campaign trail. The Dutch were founding members of the union, but attitudes have cooled in recent years.
Fisherman Jan de Boer said he is concerned about the future of his industry -- which he says is threatened by EU regulations -- and this will be at the forefront of his mind when he comes to fill out his ballot on election day.
"The rules are very bad for the fishermen of the Netherlands," he said. "We want fishing and our children want fishing."
Until now, de Boer has always voted for the Christian Party -- but this time around, he said, that will change. "Geert Wilders' ... is the only party that fights European rules, and for me that's important."
But bus company worker Leonard Schaab said he didn't believe Wilders will do as well as expected: "The polls are always a little bit off, and when the real elections [take place] most of the time people will vote for other parties."
"The man doesn't have the skills to do it," he added. "The only thing Geert Wilders does is shout about all kinds of problems ... he creates problems, but he never has solutions."

Documents show Obasanjo was involved in Malabu deal-Thecable

Documents seen by TheCable show the involvement of  former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the controversial OPL 245 oil block deal.
In the deal finally consummated in 2011, only $210 million of the $1.3 billion paid by Shell and Eni for the block went into federal government coffers as “signature bonus”.
The rest was paid to Malabu Oil and Gas, mainly owned by Dan Etete, who, as petroleum minister in 1998, had awarded the lucrative licence to himself.
The sale to Malabu was nullified by Obasanjo in 1999 and assigned to Shell — without a public bid.

White House: Trump paid $38 million in federal taxes in 2005

BY JUSTIN FISHEL

The White House said Tuesday night that Donald Trump paid $38 million in federal taxes on income of more than $150 million in 2005 after independent journalist David Cay Johnston obtained the purported first two pages of that return and made them public.

Johnston appeared on MSNBC Tuesday night to report on the documents, which he says were delivered anonymously to his mailbox. Johnston speculated that Trump, who is the first president in decades not to release his taxes, or someone close to him, may have been the source of the documents.

The White House issued a response to ABC News ahead of the broadcast lauding Trump's income and taxes paid.

See Why Etisalat May Soon Exit Nigeria

Etisalat

There is a possibility that the Abu Dhabi telecoms group Etisalat may sell its stake in Etisalat Nigeria due to the $1.2 billion loan the telecoms firm has incurred but want the firm’s debt restructured before doing so.

The decision is coming after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Communication’s Commission (NCC) on Friday agreed with the 13 creditor banks to pursue a default deal rather than a receivership for the mobile operator so as not to deter investors and to avoid a wider debt crisis.

Etisalat is due to meet with creditors in Nigeria between today and tomorrow to discuss the default, a source told Reuters.

Kevin De Bruyne wanted Chelsea training sessions open to the public after Jose Mourinho criticised his workrate

Kevin De Bruyne has revealed he wanted Chelsea's training sessions to be open to the public after being accusing of not trying.

The Belgian started only two Premier League games for the Blues after his £7m transfer from Genk in 2012 and was sent back out on loan to Werder Bremen.

He was then sold to Wolfsburg for £18m before returning to English football with Manchester City for £55m in 2015.

Like Romelu Lukaku, then Blues boss Jose Mourinho did not rate De Bruyne – and publicly criticised his workrate.

“It is true that he said that in the press, yes,” said the Belgian. “That I wasn't doing what was needed in training. It was easy to say that because there was no-one to check it – the training sessions were closed to the public. But everyone knows I am not like that.

Fanta and Sprite

A Lagos High Court has ordered the National Agency For Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to immediately direct the manufacturers of soft drinks; Fanta and Sprite (Nigeria Bottling Company PLC) to include a written warning that the content of the bottles cannot be taken with Vitamin C.

This was the result from a suit filed against the NBC and NAFDAC by Lagos businessman, Dr Emmanuel Fijabi Adebo and his company, Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited.

His lawyer alleged that sometime in March, 2007, his client’s company purchased large quantities of Coca-Cola, Fanta Orange, Sprite, Fanta Lemon, Fanta Pineapple and Soda Water from NBC for export to the UK for retail purposes and supply to their customers. When the packages arrived there, fundamental health related matters were raised on the contents and composition of the Fanta and Sprite products by the UK Health Authorities, specifically the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s Trading Standard Department of Environment and Economy Directorate.

NYSC: Family of late corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, cries out for justice, accuses scheme of conspiracy

The family of the late corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died in Kano NYSC orientation camp on November 29, 2016 has cried out for justice, as they accused the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of conspiracy to pervert the cause of justice.

Speaking with DAILY POST on Monday, the father of the deceased, Mr Wale Oladepo, said the preliminary report of an investigative panel, set up by the presidency indicted NYSC of negligence, which ultimately gave credence to the earlier position of the family on the death of Ifedolapo.

Oladepo explained that the lackadaisical approach of the NYSC management at Kano orientation camp towards his daughter at the initial stage of her ailment, coupled with yet to be known injection administered on her later, which made her fair skin to turn black and her tongue twisted was responsible for her untimely death.

2016 was 'rock bottom' for children in Syria, says UNICEF

A Syrian Kurdish child cries as Turkish police search their bags after they crossed the border between Syria and Turkey at the southeastern town of Suruc in Sanliurfa province on September 23, 2014.

(CNN)More Syrian children were killed in 2016 than in any other year of the six-year conflict, making last year the worst on record for children in the war-torn nation, according to children's charity UNICEF.
At least 652 children died in the last 12 months, a 20% increase on 2015, the organization said in a damning new report published Monday.
Nearly half of those children were killed in or near school.
The report includes only verified figures, meaning the death toll could be much higher, the report said.

Eden Hazard: Chelsea must not replicate PSG's collapse at Barcelona

Eden Hazard admits that Chelsea will be guilty of a capitulation to rival Paris Saint-Germain's stunning Champions League collapse against Barcelona if they surrender a 10-point lead in the Premier League title race.

The Spanish champions pulled off the biggest comeback in the history of Europe's elite club competition on Wednesday, overturning a 4-0 first-leg deficit by beating PSG 6-1 at Camp Nou and scoring three goals in the final eight minutes of play.

Failed power sector privatisation ‘may dog Buhari’s plan to sell oil assets

Failed power sector privatisation ‘may dog Buhari’s plan to sell oil assets’

On March 7, 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari’s government released its much-awaited recovery plan which proposed selling off some of Nigeria’s oil stake in order to raise revenue and drive efficiency.

The Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which is expected to start in 2017 and run through 2020, aims to reduce Nigeria’s stake in joint ventures with Shell, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Total and Eni, from an average of 55 percent to figures less than 50 percent.

Experts and analysts however believe that the proposal to sell oil assets will not be an easy one for the government, which has a questionable track record on privatisation.

Brexit: Scottish leader seeks UK split as EU divorce looms

Brexit: UK government warned over 'serious dereliction of duty'

London (CNN)The first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, said she would seek approval for a new independence referendum for the country next week.
Sturgeon said it was clear that the UK was heading for a "hard Brexit" to the detriment of Scotland, and that Scottish voters deserved a choice of remaining in the European Union as part of an independent nation.
Scotland voted 62% to 38% to remain in the EU and Sturgeon said it was for the people to decide whether they followed the rest of the UK or forged their own path.
"I am ensuring that Scotland's future ... will be decided by the people of Scotland," she said at a press conference in Edinburgh on Monday.
"It will be Scotland's choice and I trust the people of Scotland to make that choice."
Sturgeon said the referendum would take place between late 2018 and early 2019.
Her announcement came as the British government prepared to fire the starting gun of leaving the European Union.
